New Employment Academy cafe set to benefit community

A new cafe offering job opportunities to disadvantaged members of the local community is opening up at the Thames Reach Employment Academy in Camberwell.

The Brewbird cafe, which is opening on Thursday, December 17, offering breakfasts, lunches, coffee and snacks made from healthy, locally sourced produce is the brainchild of the St Giles Trust charity.

Ex-offenders, long-term unemployed, formerly homeless people and youngsters at risk of involvement with the criminal justice system will be able to get full and part-time jobs, work experience, develop their self-confidence and create a routine and structure in their lives.

The social enterprise will invest any profits back into the project in order to help more people find work.

The Brewbird cafe is on Havil Street close to both Camberwell and Peckham, and will initially be open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and from 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays.

Breakfasts will include pastries, yoghurts, granola and bacon sandwiches. Lunches will include sandwiches, salads, soups and hot food.

In the New Year, the plan is to extend opening into the evenings until 10pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and to be run as a pizzeria.

The organisers plan to run exhibitions, poetry evenings, talks and a supper club at the café.

David Adams, operations manager for Brewbird, said: “As well as great coffee and cake, our main focus is to give ex-offenders a second chance and put their past behind them.

“Over 60% of people coming out of prison re-offend within their first year of release. We believe that by giving people the opportunity to get straight into a working environment, we can drastically cut this number.

“Our employees receive training in barista and baking skills, as well as customer service and management, all in a judgement-free environment that allows them to shine.”
