New scheme jumpstarts employment hopes

3 February 2017

A formerly homeless man has been helped to find work thanks to an innovative new service being hosted at the Employment Academy.

Adrian, who had been sleeping rough in parks across Lambeth before being housed late last year, was assisted by the Jumpstart employment support service, which has been set up at the Employment Academy, by Thames Reach, to help L&Q residents living in supported accommodation.

Eager to find work, Adrian enrolled on the Jumpstart project and the support worker immediately put in a successful application to the Thames Reach Hard to Reach Fund for a bike, helmet, lights and a lock – within 24 hours he had not only passed a job interview but successfully completed his first shift delivering takeaway meals for Deliveroo.

Adrian said: “I used to run a support service helping youngsters, but when that fell through, I ended up homeless and sofa surfing, struggling with depression and before long I was sleeping out in parks.

“Now I’m housed and working hard to support myself, and I recently got a second job with Uber. I wanted to thank my support worker Denise who helped me get my life back on track.”

Denise Vilanou, the Jumpstart support worker, said: “On meeting Adrian I was struck by his motivation and eagerness to be independent of benefits and to turn his life around.

“He is a self-starter and the only obstacle preventing him from finding work were the tools to carry this out.

“I am very grateful to the Guinness Partnership and the Hard to Reach Fund, which enables us to help the people using our service to achieve their goals.”

The Hard to Reach Fund was set up recently to help formerly homeless people purchase items that will help them move away from a street lifestyle and get their lives back on track.

It is funded by the Guinness Partnership, one of the biggest providers of affordable housing and care in England, who donated £250,000.
